So I hysterically looked of Ford Probe’s thinking cheap RWD FWD manual and found an AWESOME AD. (EDIT: this cold is hitting me harder than I thought it was, of course it’s FWD.)

Kinja'd!!!

I wonder if the plate can stay with the car?

The Probe is FWD. It was supposed to be the Fox body replacement, until Mustang fans lost their freaking minds when they heard the next stang would be FWD, like “one dem gat dang imports.”

Might be a silly question, but why aren’t you just getting a civic? Not fully sure what the SCCA rules are regarding the classes, but you can get a Civic engine with 160 hp from the factory (b16a engine), that should instantly be competitive anywhere. Just get an LSD if you plan to race on gravel and you’ll be set

Well, I prefer domestic brands and I’d rather try and be competitive in something different. I don’t know why but I always try to be a bit different with my cars. Our current fleet is - 1968 Mercury Montego MX, 2007 Mercury Milan V6, 2008 Jeep Commander.

I know there are “sure fire” ways to get success in RallyX and it may be harder to compete by not just simply buying the most successful Rally Car.

Just the way I am.

And I’m sure I could put in an LSD which I would want because it’s all dirt, mud, gravel, grass that the driving is done on that would definitely put me into the Modified class.

And despite getting my ass kicked most of the day in the Milan - I still had a great time. I also was able to finally get it competitive in my last run of the day where I was only a second or 2 off the faster more traditional cars.

Probes handle pretty darn well. I enjoyed my time I had with mine. And the 5 speed is a pretty good unit. You’d really have to beat on the car to break anything in it. Sure, it isn’t quick, but if you’re autocrossing it you can probably surprise a lot of people.

RallyX is the intention so that the Milan doesn’t get overly abused and I can be more competitive. I think it would do pretty good actually.

Right, forgot about the domestic cars thing, my bad :D

Well, if you’re not concerned with being competitive, I’d definitely suggest a switch to RWD in something like a foxbody mustang (or maybe the next generation, do those also have names? “ugly” comes to mind, but that can’t be it) - that one’s both domestic and cheap when something inevitably breaks down (which will happen a lot with any car you choose for this).

The great thing about RWD cars is that you can have a lot more fun than in an FWD and, heck, if you get the 5.0 (which you should, as the smaller engines are hopelessly underpowered), you can try your hand at drifting, which is pretty much the most fun you can have in a car, with the exception of rallying (but that costs way more than grassroots drifting).

In the last year, my BMW has competed in drifting, gymkhana (actually had a video of that in my last post), something similar to SCCA AutoX, something similar to what you have with rallycross, and I’ve also done a test day on a rally stage - all while having just two sets of suspension (cheap coilovers for drifting/asphalt and Koni Sport/Bilstein B6 for everything else). And you know what? My car was competitive in every single event, while bringing a smile to my face that an FWD car just can’t :)

Having said that, driving an FWD car is also great fun and I do like racing them whenever I get the chance (well, judging by my username, it’d be safe to assume that I like racing anything)

If I went RWD a Fox Platform Mustang (OR MERCURY CAPRI) would be perfect, I already own one 5.0L Ford V8 so I’m very familiar with them, even if the newer ones have Fuel Injection instead of my old Mercury with a Holley 4 barrel.

I would consider RWD, one thing for me to keep in mind is that if I actually get into this I’m hoping my wife will join in and we can co-drive a car. I’m going to have to teach her how to drive stick if we’re going to be competitive because there’s no way an automatic is going to cut it if we’re going into RWD Modified. I would even consider a Camaro or Firebird but they’re bigger and probably heavier. Plus my closeness with the 5.0 will help with repairs.

Driving an RWD car is actually a bit more intuitive than an FWD car, as people tend to release the gas pedal if the rear steps out of line, which is what you want for RWD, but will be a disaster in an FWD car :)

Not sure what the level of competition is like in your region, but I’d think that you want the lightest possible car to compete with the best guys

Yep, modified RWD was dominated by Supercharged Miata’s and Toyota MR2's. I’m guessing the Fox Mustang even in notchback might be a bit too heavy.

On the other hand, maybe I should look for a Fiero which are damn near infinitely customizable.

Mid-engined cars will be a handful, FR layout would be much easier to drive :)

But weren’t you the one just encouraging the most FUN ride? Because a Mid Engined would be a ball

I was (and am) all for fun, and it all depends on what fun is to you - for me, it’s going sideways, which you’ll have a very hard time doing with a mid-engined car, as their handling takes some getting used to and some quirks might get you in a lot of trouble if you don’t drive it like it should be driven.

With a typical FR layout car, however, it’s much more difficult to spin out and you can hold longer and deeper slides (thus having, in my opinion, more fun).

That being said, once you get the hang of it, you’ll likely be quicker in an MR car - here in Europe, MR cars are occasionally put in classes where they have to compete against FWD cars, as it is just not fair to other RWD’s :D

Hahahaha

That’s true it’s definitely going to be a tough call.

I’ll keep poking around the internet looking at curb weights trying to figure out how light I can get an American car. It looks like Fiero’s and MR2's aren’t too far off weight wise from each other which is nice.

I Notchback Mustang on the fox platform could be a lot of fun too, and possibly even lighter when stripped down than a Fiero.
